What Do I Do, When People Say No?

I’ve been asked this question a few times: “What do you do when people say no to funding proposals?”

When I was first asked this question, I didn’t have much of an answer. At that time, I hadn’t encountered many “no’s.” But as the months have gone by and as the number of “yes’s” has grown, so too have the “no’s.” It’s a natural rhythm in life - when we step forward and strive for something bigger, we inevitably face resistance alongside progress.

At first, hearing “no” can sting, and I’ll be honest - It still does. It’s easy to feel disheartened, to want to sit and wallow in disappointment. But I’ve realised that while that might be the easier option, perhaps even the easiest - It’s not the right one. The harder choice - to put my head down, refocus, and get back to work - is by far the more important one, and 100% the right one too. Because the mission doesn’t stop for setbacks, and neither can I.

For me, each “no” has become a stepping stone toward resilience. It’s taught me the value of persistence and the importance of staying grounded in the “why” behind my work. It’s also reminded me that not everyone will see the vision as clearly as you do, and that’s okay. A “no” doesn’t diminish the worth of what you’re trying to achieve.

In fact, it makes every “yes” even more meaningful. Each person who says “yes” to supporting my work isn’t just funding a project; they’re affirming a belief in the power of community, equity, and the principle of rising by lifting others.

So, what do I do when people say no? I listen, I learn, and I keep moving forward. Because with every “no,” I’m reminded that the mission is far greater than any setback.

To anyone else out there hearing “no” on their journey: take heart. Every “no” is just part of the story we’re building. And when we truly believe in what we’re doing, no amount of rejection can outweigh the impact of one powerful “yes.”

Let’s keep pushing forward together.
